The barrier at the mouth of the Eider guards the coast against storm surges. Walking across it pays off in wind, with the gates set against the North Sea.
NOK Ferry Hohenhörn
One of the small ferries across the Kiel Canal, free of charge and running back and forth. From the deck the freighters pass close by.
Hochdonn High Bridge
A steel truss over the Kiel Canal, high enough for seagoing ships beneath it. When a train crosses up top, the rumble carries to the bank.

The nearest larger city, about 66 km away, with its fjord and harbour. The pick for a rainy day with museums and a walk along the water.
