Cathedral city on the Rhine, about 17 kilometres north. The Romanesque cathedral and narrow old-town lanes fill a day; the Gutenberg Museum is the fallback for rainy hours.
Oppenheim
Wine town next door, the Gothic St Catherine's church rising above the roofs. Beneath the lanes runs the cellar labyrinth through the rock, cool on hot days.
Burg Rheinstein
Above the Rhine near Bingen, one of the restored hill castles in the valley. The view from the keep runs far upstream, a trip into the Middle Rhine gorge.
