Place on the organic farm on the slate wacken way
A organic farm near Herl, not fifteen kilometers before Trier, perched between Hunsrück-Hochwald and Mosel Valley. There are suckler cows, pigs and chickens, plus a few boarding horses — this is explicitly not a riding facility. In the morning the roosters crow, the view stretches far across the hills. From the farm, the Traumschleife Schiefer-Wacken-Weg hiking trail leads directly into the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, and those who wish can hike down into the Mosel Valley to visit the wineries. Self-sufficiency is a requirement. You need to bring your own toilet, as nothing can be emptied here.1

Sights in the area1
Trier
Germany's oldest city, not quite thirteen kilometres away, with the Porta Nigra and the Kaiser Baths from Roman times. The rainy-day classic when the wind sweeps the pastures up on the heights.
Saar-Hunsrück-Steig
The long-distance trail across the heights of the Hunsrück; the Schiefer-Wacken-Weg loop starts at the farm. A full day's round with no drive, good for warming up.
Moselle Valley
Behind the heights the land drops to the Moselle, to steep vineyards and winegrowing villages by the river. The walk down rewards you with a glass of Riesling by the water.
