Kleinmaischeid

Dreaming with alpacas at the Iserbach loop

A small meadow near Kleinmaischeid in the Westerwald, right next to the alpaca herd. In the morning you can be there during feeding time when the animals come to the fence for care. The meadow is sloped; the farm provides leveling wedges, electricity is only available with your own extension cable. Sometimes the herd is not at the site — then it grazes a kilometer away at the edge of the village so the grass can regrow. Soft alpaca wool is available in the farm shop. It's not far to the climbing park in Sayn, and the Iserbachschleife runs past hiking and cycling trails.1

What Hinterland writes

Sights in the area1

Kletterpark Sayn

High ropes course among old trees by the Sayn castle park; the afternoon for anyone who needs to move again after the quiet with the alpacas.

Iserbachschleife

Waymarked loop through the Westerwald's small stream valleys, also rideable by mountain bike; the trailhead sits practically outside the meadow.

Koblenz

At the Deutsches Eck the Rhine and Moselle meet, about 18 km away; from there the Rhine cycle path runs upstream and down.

Lahntal

A green river valley southeast of Koblenz, flat and close to the water; the gentler ride when the Westerwald gets too hilly.
