Self-sufficient in the meadow
A meadow near Wrohm, in the land between Rendsburg and Heide, where the Eider and the Nord-Ostseekanal run close together. Views stretch across the fields, otherwise not much happens. During the day, cyclists and walkers pass through the area, patient anglers sit by the fishing ponds. Upon request, the host will place a fire barrel with some wood in front of the door. A trip to the Eidersperrwerk is worthwhile, as is a visit to the Hochdonn railway high bridge. Otherwise: peace and wide open skies.1

Sights in the area1
Eider Barrage
Germany's largest storm-surge barrier at the Eider estuary. As the tides turn you can watch the gates work, with seals on the sandbanks nearby — a North Sea outing that holds up in any weather.
Kiel Canal ferry at Hohenhörn
A free ferry across the Kiel Canal at Hohenhörn. The crossing takes only minutes, and for anyone travelling with children it saves planning an afternoon: the boat itself is the attraction.
Hochdonn High Bridge
The steel railway bridge carries trains high above the Kiel Canal. From below the carriages look tiny against the sky; a good stop when it rains and you still want to see something.
