Pond at the foot of the Köhnigshain mountains

A place just outside Nieder Seifersdorf, a village in the municipality of Waldhufen at the foot of the Königshainer Mountains. From the window, your gaze falls sometimes into the little woods, sometimes across open fields, sometimes onto the pond. There, beneath old oaks, the fireplace glows in the evening. You hardly need more than that. Bread and the essentials are picked up at the baker's and the small shop in the village. If you want to venture further afield, Görlitz and Bautzen are within reach, and for a family day out there's Kulturinsel Einsiedel.1

What Hinterland writes

Sights in the area1

Königshainer Berge

Wooded granite hills right behind the site, with an old quarry and lookout rocks. Short trails for walking, the after-work hill of the area.

Görlitz

Germany's easternmost town on the Neisse, with over a thousand listed buildings. A film-set backdrop; the rainy-day stroll through the old town pays off.

Bautzen

Town of towers above the Spree, heart of the Sorbian Lusatia. Narrow lanes, defensive towers and the view from the Reichenturm; an afternoon covers the round.

Kulturinsel Einsiedel

Whimsical adventure park on the Neisse with tree houses and wooden sculptures. The day trip for families with children.
