Kratzmühlsee
A swimming lake in the Altmühl valley, created by gravel extraction. Shallow shores, a path around it, meadows on the north side — the cool-down after a long day of walking.
Prunn Castle
The castle sits on a rock spur high above the Altmühl and is visible from far off. Inside, the Nibelungenlied manuscript found here is remembered; half a day is enough.
Dietfurt
A small town on the Altmühl, known for its Chinese carnival in February. Otherwise a quiet place with a harbour on the Main-Danube Canal, a good start for a ride along the water.
Ingolstadt
About 36 kilometres away, with an old town, the Danube riverside and museums in the former arsenal. The rainy-day classic when the ridge trails get too wet.
