Dithmarschen · Osterrade

At our donkey paddock

A pitch in Osterrade, in the Dithmarscher hinterland. The ground is compacted gravel rather than paved, with a grass area alongside. There's not much more to say about it. Anyone who wakes at night hears the wind sweeping across the flat landscape, otherwise little else. The surrounding area does the rest: at Hochdonn, the railway viaduct spans the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, and the Hohenhörn ferry crosses at the water below. Kiel is around 52 kilometers away.1

Sights in the area1

Hochdonn Railway High Bridge

A steel colossus above the Kiel Canal with freighters passing underneath. Wait a quarter of an hour and you get a train on top and a ship below.

Hohenhörn Canal Ferry

One of the small canal ferries running between the bridges. A short crossing, a good detour on a bike tour through the marshland.

Eider Barrage

The large barrage at the mouth of the Eider, built against North Sea storm surges. At low tide seals often rest on the sandbanks in front of it.

Kiel Canal

The world's busiest artificial waterway for seagoing ships runs through Dithmarschen. From the bank the ship traffic can be watched close up.
