At the Fish Ponds Mittershausen (Am Pfalzbach Street)

A spot by the fish pond in Mittershausen, a district of Heppenheim. Very peaceful and very basic: no toilet, no water, no electricity. In return, there's a fire pit, plus a table and bench. You'll find the pitch behind the fish hatchery, past the fire pit. Fishing is not currently allowed. In the evening, the wood crackles, otherwise it stays quiet by the pond. Mannheim is about 23 kilometers away; Heppenheim's old town and Auerbach Castle are located on the Bergstraße.1

Sights in the area1

Heppenheim Old Town

The market square with its half-timbered houses and the old Liebig pharmacy is the historic heart of the Bergstraße; a stroll through the lanes fills half an afternoon.

Auerbach Castle

The castle ruin with its two towers sits above the Bergstraße; from up top the view stretches far across the Rhine plain, and the climb pays off on a clear day.

Felsberg in the Odenwald

The Felsenmeer runs down the slope, a jumble of huge granite blocks with traces of Roman quarrying; the classic outing for a day of hiking with kids.
