A campsite in Dürrröhrsdorf-Dittersbach, in Saxon Switzerland east of Dresden, open for tents, motorhomes and caravans. Things run without fuss here, and there's a lively atmosphere; the owner provides plenty of facilities, and if you want to hike or cycle, you'll find excellent access from here. One honest drawback remains: when the site is full, you might have to wait for the toilet or sink. No big deal though. In return, the trails lead to Bastei, where the sandstone glows reddish in the morning sun. Dresden is less than sixteen kilometres away, with the Fürstenzug in the Old Town.1

One of Europe's largest hilltop fortresses, set on a table mountain above the Elbe. The rainy-day fallback: casemates and museums fill a whole afternoon.
Malerweg
The trail that once led painters like Caspar David Friedrich through the rock formations. Walk it in day stages; the start for long tours lies right in the region.
Dresden
The state capital about sixteen kilometres away, with the Fürstenzug mural of Meissen porcelain and the Blue Wonder bridge over the Elbe. The town day for when the weather turns.
