Above the Nahe near Bad Münster am Stein rises the red rock face said to be the highest cliff north of the Alps; a panorama trail runs along the edge up top — sure footing required.
Burg Rheinstein
High above the Middle Rhine near Bingen sits the romantic knights' castle; from the battlements you watch the freighters pass in the valley below — the outing for a clear day.
Mainz
The state capital on the Rhine, about 37 kilometres away: the Romanesque cathedral and the riverside promenade; a city day for when the hiking has been enough.
