Around Hamburg, water extends far into the countryside: the Elbe with beaches and ferries, the Alster in the heart of the city, and vast marshlands at their edges. To the southwest lies the Alte Land, one of Europe's largest contiguous fruit-growing regions; to the east, the Vier- and Marschlande with fields and ditches. Those venturing out here quickly move between dike, marshland meadow, and harbor edge. The proximity to the North and Baltic seas makes the area a starting point for coastal tours.
