Free camping near Kappel in the Hunsrück. In the evenings it becomes peaceful, you stand on your own, alone on the site. Eventually the dog trots over and greets you loudly; after a brief command he becomes your best friend. The catch comes at night: trucks roll past on the nearby federal highway in waves, and anyone sleeping in a roof tent wakes up repeatedly. During the day, the Hunsrück lies at your doorstep, the Baybachtal with its waterfall. It's around 39 kilometers to Koblenz on the Rhine.1

A small waterfall in a narrow side valley of the Hunsrück. The trail along the stream is the go-to for a half day with wet shoes.
Rhine Cycle Path near Koblenz
The riverside cycle route on the Rhine, about 39 kilometres away at Koblenz. Flat and signposted, good for a day trip without any climbing.
Thurant Castle
A twin-towered castle above the Moselle near Alken, quick to reach from the Rhine towns. The view into the vineyard valley rewards the climb.
