AlpacaCamping 1697

A quiet meadow near Struppen, above the Elbe between Pirna and Saxon Switzerland. Check-in was contactless, and there's not much human contact here. There's no shade at all, and the sun beats down on the site at midday. Those who stay should be self-sufficient and bring their own water and power. The site works well as a base: a few kilometres to Bastei, around 22 to Dresden. In the morning, just the hum of insects over the grass.1

What AlpacaCamping writes

Sights in the area1

Bastei

The rock bridge above the Elbe valley, the best-known view of Saxon Switzerland. Early in the morning you stand there almost alone, before the buses arrive.

Königstein Fortress

A sprawling hilltop fortress high above the Elbe, never captured. From the ramparts the view runs across the whole valley, a good half-day trip.

Malerweg

The classic trail through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, walked in day stages. Trailheads sit around Pirna, just round the corner.

Dresden

Around 22 km away, with the Fürstenzug and the Blue Wonder bridge over the Elbe. The city day for when rain moves into the rocks above.
