Mönchsdeggingen

Parking directly on the Ries Crater rim (Donau-Ries)

A parking spot near Mönchsdeggingen, between Donau-Ries and Kesseltal, right beside a stream with a small pond and a few trees. You can hear the water babbling — that's the entertainment here. Hiking and cycling trails run through the area; it's 15 kilometres to Nördlingen and 17 to Donauwörth, both doable by bike. Tent camping is also possible. Dogs are welcome. Rolls available on request, WiFi at the farmhouse if your mobile signal fails. In the evening, there's the stream.1

Sights in the area1

Nördlingen

Its town wall survives almost intact and can be walked all the way around; from the Daniel church tower you look out over the round old town. About 15 kilometres, an easy ride.

Ries Crater Museum

Explains how a meteorite impact formed the Nördlinger Ries and shaped the ground across the whole area — the rainy-day standby nearby.

Donauwörth

A former Swabian imperial town on the Danube with its broad Reichsstraße and the Fugger house; about 17 kilometres along the cycle paths, a day trip.
