Heinrichsthal

Sports ground camping

The sports field of Heinrichsthal, the highest municipality in the Spessart, becomes a parking spot: a meadow next to the playground or, if wet, a graveled parking area. Surrounded by forest on all sides. Two old long-distance trails start here, the Eselsweg and the Birkenhainer Straße. Those who come without a tent will find a shelter between the trees for a hammock or bivy. In the morning, mist hangs over the meadow before the first hikers set off.1

What Hinterland writes

„Welcome to the highest community in the Spessart. With its trails, the Spessart Forest offers many options for short or long hikes and bike tours and direct access to two well-known long-distance hiking trails: the Eselsweg and the Birkenhainer Straße.“

Sights in the area1

Klingenberg am Main

Wine village on the Main, known for its red wine grown on red sandstone; a stroll through the narrow lanes and up into the vineyards suits a mild afternoon.

Miltenberg

Half-timbered town on the Main with an old marketplace and the river bridge; the classic outing for a rainy day when the woods are too wet to walk.

Eselsweg

Old salt route along the Spessart ridge, walkable from here in day stages; little climbing, plenty of forest, good even for half a day.
