Bad Gandersheim
The spa town is eight kilometres away; in summer the Gandersheim Cathedral Festival plays there under the open sky. Even without a ticket, the old collegiate town is worth a stroll.
Harz
The low mountain range starts a good half-hour's drive on — with the Brocken, half-timbered towns and hiking trails. The escape when the lowland gets too quiet.
Sculpture Trail
The cycling and walking path follows a disused railway line and so stays flat through otherwise hilly country. Sculptures line the way, good for an afternoon without climbs.
Salzgittersee
A good thirty kilometres north, near Salzgitter, lies a bathing lake with a beach on its west shore. The cool-off for hot days when the Harz is too far.
