Viechtach

Camping on the river

A camping island in the Schwarzer Regen near Viechtach, right in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. The river flows all around it, and you can hear the water all day long. Cooking is done over an open fire; in the evening you sit in the Bongo Bar with a self-mixed drink and wind down the day. Everyone sets their own pace. A footbridge through the gorge leads to the Rißlochwasserfall, and hikers and mountain bikers head to the Geißkopf. At night, the rushing water remains.1

What roadsurfer spots writes

The Rißloch falls are among the highest waterfalls in the Bavarian Forest; the upper boardwalk leads right through the gorge — a rewarding trip after a rainy day, when the water runs high.

Geißkopf

The Geißkopf is the local mountain-bikers' hill; trails drop down it in summer, snow covers the slopes in winter. The active day out, when the river gets too quiet.

Kötztinger Hütte

A staffed mountain hut on the heights of the Bavarian Forest, a goal for hikers on the ridge trails; the stop-off with a wide view, once your legs have earned it.
