Camping with a View of the Stars

A pitch on the Hohe Geba above Rhönblick, at 751 meters. The Rhön bears the Starry Sky Reserve seal, and once darkness falls, you understand why: above the five observation platforms, the sky is densely packed with stars, and on some evenings, someone guides you through them. During the day, the view extends from the Hohe Rhön to the Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest. The site is exclusively for self-sufficient campers. No water, no toilet. Power is available at the platforms. The Bergstübchen opens during the season.1

What roadsurfer spots writes

„Welcome to the Window to the Universe. The Rhön, as a certified starlight park, offers an experience worth having both day and night.

At night, the window to the universe opens on Hohe Geba and provides a unique glimpse into our cosmos.“

Sights in the area1

Drachenschlucht Gorge

A narrow ravine near Eisenach in the Thuringian Forest, in places barely shoulder-wide on wooden walkways. A shady walk for hot days.

Trusetal Waterfall

The water drops around 60 metres over several steps. A quick stop on the way through the Thuringian Forest.

Erfurt Old Town

About 68 km away, medieval lanes and the cathedral hill with the Severikirche. The escape when fog sits on the Geba up top.
