Ehingen

Camping at Burgschänke

A meadow by the guesthouse in Ehingen, mostly level, with forest bordering the back. There are no fixed pitches: after a word with the innkeeper, you choose your own spot, as large as your vehicle needs. Tall motorhomes fit too. In the morning, pre-ordered rolls are brought to your table, and a full breakfast can also be ordered. On clear nights, it gets dark enough to see the stars above the forest edge. Nördlingen is a short excursion away, with the Ries crater museum in the old town. Twenty litres of water are included, anything beyond that costs extra.1

Sights in the area1

Nördlingen town wall

The covered walkway around the old town can be walked in full, looking down into the lanes. Roughly an hour on foot, and a decent shelter in the rain.

Ries Crater Museum

Explains the meteorite impact that shaped the flat Ries plain around Nördlingen. The obvious choice for days when the bikes stay parked.

The Daniel

The tower of St. George in Nördlingen. Climb the steps to the top and the crater rim shows up as a ring on the horizon.

Cadolzburg castle

A medieval castle in the Fürth area, some 52 km away, today a museum about courtly life. Half a day covers both castle and village.
