From the piers the old tunnel runs under the Elbe to Steinwerder, where you face the harbour skyline. Hamburg is about 51 kilometres away.
Elbphilharmonie & HafenCity
The viewing plaza above the Speicherstadt is open without a concert ticket, and from up there you watch the harbour at work. The safe bet on a rainy day.
Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve
Floodplain forests, dykes and stork villages along the river. The flat paths on top of the dyke work with children and a heavily loaded bike too.
Altes Land
Fruit-growing country south of the Elbe, half-timbered farms between apple orchards. Worth a bike ride when the trees blossom, farm sales in autumn.
