At the Drögemühle
An old water mill near Gardelegen, where the Milde river originates. Scottish Highland cattle graze on the surrounding meadows, and the forest begins just beyond. The farmstead is a listed monument currently undergoing renovation, with much still in progress. It's very quiet here: the Hoppenmühle mill downstream is eight hundred metres away, and the nearest village is two kilometres away. In the morning, it smells of meadow and damp wood. Hiking trails and cycling routes run through the Altmark region, and the Uenglinger Tor in Stendal is worth a day trip.1

A small cable ferry across the Elbe near Räbel, driven by the current alone with no engine. A quiet stop on a bike tour through the Elbe valley.
Allersee
A bathing lake right in Wolfsburg, about 45 km away, with a sandy beach and a loop trail. The cool-down for hot days when the Milde meadows get too warm.
