A peaceful pitch in Amt Neuhaus, well-maintained with clean sanitary facilities. Heidi and Jürgen welcome you with a welcoming drink and a few words about the area. There's a wooden bench for sitting that catches the sun well in the evenings; you're welcome to use the cushions. In the evening, something unusual: barking deer in the darkness, which Jürgen patiently explains. A small passenger ferry takes you across to Hitzacker, and bicycles are welcome on board. Nearby is a wandering dune – sand in the middle of flat countryside.1

A small half-timbered town on the far bank of the Elbe. A passenger ferry crosses the river and takes bikes along, turning the visit into a short ride across the water.
Drifting Dune in the Elbe Valley
A dune of pale sand sits in the flat Elbe lowland, unusual for the area. A short path leads up, good for a loop among the pines.
Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve
The floodplain along the Elbe is protected: dikes, meadows and cranes resting in autumn. The Elbe Cycle Route runs beside the river, flat and wide.
