Nördlingen Ries - Highlights

The Nördlinger Ries is a fertile basin roughly 20 kilometers wide located in the border region between Bavarian Swabia and Baden-Württemberg, formed by a meteorite impact approximately 15 million years ago. The forested crater rim is still recognizable today as a ridge marking the transition between the Swabian and Franconian Alps. Flat agricultural land lies within the basin, in the center of which stands the old town of Nördlingen, enclosed by a completely preserved city wall. Hiking and cycling paths connect the villages across the wide, open plain.

Nördlingen City Walls

Germany's only completely preserved city wall that is fully accessible — nearly three kilometers long with eleven towers and five gates.

The Daniel

The 90-metre tower of St. Georg Church, built from Suevit crater rock; to this day, the tower watchman still calls out his "So, G'sell, so" from above.

Ries Crater Museum
