Sylt is an island in the North Sea off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein and the largest of the North Frisian Islands. It is connected to the mainland by rail via the Hindenburg Causeway. The west side slopes down to the North Sea with a long, open sandy beach, while the east side is bordered by mudflats; between them lie dunes, heathland and the Red Cliff near Kampen. Beach walks, mudflat hikes and cycling tours through the dune landscape characterize outdoor activities on the island.
