The Keller Forest - Highlights
The Kellerwald is a forested low mountain range in northern Hesse, southwest of Kassel between the Eder and Schwalm rivers. At its core lies the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park with extensive, old beech forests that are part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. To the north, the Kellerwald borders the Edersee, a large reservoir. Steep slopes, natural forests and the lake make the area a destination for hikes and peaceful days in nature.

Quartzite wall
Quartzite is an extremely hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock formed by the crystallization of silica-rich sandstone. It occurs in many places around the world and is often used as a building material because it can be cut into any shape. The quartzite walls in the Kellerwald are among the most impressive natural formations in Germany. It's always great to discover new things in your homeland!
Beautiful path
The Kellerwald is one of the most beautiful forests in Germany. It's also home to an incredible hiking trail that offers something for everyone, from easy walks to challenging hikes. Desert Garden
Wüstegarten is a small village in the heart of the Kellerwald and perfect for those who want to experience nature at its best. We have many hiking trails that will take you through beautiful forests and past picturesque lakes. You can also take a bike ride or walk your dog. There is a lot to do here!
Exhelmer stone
This is one of the many rocks in this area, but it's not just any old rock - it also has an interesting story behind it! In 1887, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller wrote his poem "Excelsior" while sitting on top of this rock. The view from up there inspired him to write about climbing higher than anyone before him. A plaque commemorates this event today.
Beautiful forest path along the main road
The trail starts with a slight incline and then gradually gets steeper as it winds through the forest. There are many places where you can stop and enjoy the view of the valley below or just sit on a bench at your leisure. It's also good to ride trekking bikes because there are some steep hills that can be challenging but rewarding at the same time.
Boundary stones
We offer detours for those who want to see beautiful sights and ruins, even if they are not on their original route. This tour will take you through a forest with huge beech trees, past an old mill and along the banks of the Lutter River. You will also explore one of the most important cultural landscapes in Germany - the Kellerwald near Kassel.
