The author then goes into the history of America's involvement in World War I. He explains that President Wilson was initially reluctant to get involved, but eventually changed his mind and became a strong proponent of entering the war when he realized how dramatically it would change Europe "On January 22, 1917, Germany announced unrestricted submarine warfare against all ships trading with Britain." This announcement led to an outcry on both sides, as well as from the Americans, as they basically attacked any ship, including American ships carrying trade goods, which could result in them being sunk at sea without warning or protection; damaging business relations between neutral countries like the United States, which carried British products on their merchant ships across the Atlantic and risked losing their lives if these U-boats attacked the boat¹
