The Altmühl Valley

A quiet river between bright limestone cliffs and juniper heathlands — the Altmühltal is one of Bavaria's most popular canoeing regions.

The Altmühl winds its way through the Altmühltal nature reserve in the Bavarian Jura, between Mittelfranken and the Danube, into which it flows at Kelheim. Characteristic features are the white limestone cliffs, dry juniper heaths and slowly flowing river bends. The flat, gently moving water makes the Altmühl a benign river for canoeing and kayaking. Along the hiking and cycling paths throughout the valley, there are plenty of spots to rest and spend the night.
