Bleiloch Reservoir
Germany's largest reservoir by volume, dammed on the Saale in the southern Vogtland. Passenger boats run their loops and several coves are open for swimming — a full day out by the water.
Höllental Gorge
A narrow rock gorge in the south of the region, cut deep into the stone. Slim paths and footbridges follow the water, the classic pick for a hiking day in the shade.
Burgk Castle
A well-preserved castle high above the Saale near the Bleiloch reservoir, with historic rooms and changing exhibitions. The place to head for on a rainy day around here.
Jena
A university town on the Saale, about 36 kilometres away. From the Jenzig hill the view opens over the town, the Lobdeburg ruin watches the southern edge. An afternoon with a vista.
