AlpacaCamping 1396

A pitch in Hamminkeln on the lower Rhine, open for tents, motorhomes and caravans. What guests remember is the peace and quiet: stay two days, do little. The host says nothing more than that. The area is flat enough for any bike. In winter, wild geese descend on the Rhine meadows by the thousands, audible long before you see them. It's around 22 kilometres to Bottrop, where the Tetraeder stands on top of the spoil tip.1

Sights in the area1

Tetraeder Bottrop

A walk-in steel pyramid on a slag heap in Bottrop, some 22 kilometres away. From the top platform half the Ruhr region lies open, best on a clear evening.

Halde Haniel

Spoil heap above Bottrop, crowned by an amphitheatre and a Stations of the Cross made of painted railway sleepers by Agustín Ibarrola. Worth the climb at sunset.

Halterner Stausee

A swimming lake on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, with a sandy beach and a path around the water. Not next door, but the day trip for hot weeks.
