Spend the night at the Poitou donkey pasture in the forest
A woodland site near Rehburg Loccum, right next to the Hengstweide, where heavy Poitou donkeys are bred. The last path to the pasture is gravel. During the day, birdsong, interrupted by a loud bray from the paddock — otherwise silence. The site is basic: you bring your own camping toilet and waste container. It's just a few kilometres to Steinhuder Meer, the largest lake in Northwest Germany, flat enough for a cycling trip. Tours of the donkey breeding farm are available by arrangement.1

A Cistercian monastery from the 12th century, still inhabited today. The quiet cloister and old abbey church reward the short trip, even in the rain.
Weser Cycle Route
The long-distance path follows the Weser through the Mittelweser area; from Nienburg it runs flat along the water, good for a day on the bike.
Hanover
The state capital, a good 37 kilometres off. The New Town Hall with its Maschpark and the tilted lift up into the dome round off a day in the city.
