Thuringian Tannenhof | Camping on the Tannenplantage

A camping farm near Geroda, up in eastern Thuringia. The pitches are generously laid out, with electricity and sanitary facilities available. During the day you go hiking or hop on your bike — the surrounding trails make that easy. In the evening there's the campfire — the smoke drifts low across the meadow until it gets dark. It's a good twenty-five kilometers to Jena with its Jenzig. Further south, the Saale backs up at the Bleiloch reservoir.1

Sights in the area1

Bleiloch Reservoir

Germany's largest reservoir by volume, dammed up from the river Saale. In summer excursion boats run and people swim and fish along its banks.

Höllental gorge

A narrow rocky gorge where the river Selbitz flows into Thuringia; a shady hiking trail for hot days, sturdy shoes required.

Jenzig

The local hill above Jena, a good twenty-five kilometres north; from the top the view opens over the Saale valley, a short steep climb.

Burgk Castle

A well-preserved castle high above a bend of the Saale near the reservoir; the fortifications and keep are worth an afternoon.
