Steigerwald · Sand am Main

Pitch at the winery, bottle of wine as a welcome gift

A meadow on the edge of Sand am Main, right next to the winery, with a view of the vineyards. When you arrive, you're handed a bottle of their own wine. About eighty meters further on is a playground by the Altmain, where the children disappear while the meadow stays peaceful. The Main flows gently and without steep gradients out of the town; by bike, a day is enough to reach Bamberg or Schweinfurt. In town there are inns and a shop. In summer there's a local festival on the weekend.1

Sights in the area1

Bamberg

Reachable in a day trip upriver along the Main bike path. The old town is a Unesco World Heritage site, plus the smoked-beer cellars on the Michaelsberg — the reward for a long day in the saddle.

Schweinfurt

The other direction along the Main, just as flat by bike. An industrial town with the Georg Schäfer museum and green banks by the water, a quiet destination for a grey day.

Würzburg

About 52 kilometres away, the nearest large city. The Residenz with Tiepolo's ceiling fresco is a World Heritage site, a full day's programme for when the bike stays in the shed.
