Sightseeing, chilling and grilling on the Elbe island

A tent garden on the Elbe island Wilhelmsburg, close to the Elbe cycle path. Tents only, no motorhomes allowed here. The garden is large and hardly overlooked, a female dog greets everyone loudly and then leaves you in peace. A separate bathroom with shower is available, plus a small pool and an outdoor kitchen with refrigerator. Grilling is permitted. There's constant building work, you'll pass building materials on the way to your tent. It's twenty minutes by bus and train to Hamburg city center, barely more to the Elbphilharmonie.1

Sights in the area1

Elbphilharmonie & HafenCity

The concert hall atop an old warehouse, with the new HafenCity district all around. The plaza between is free to enter and opens up the full view over the harbour, no ticket needed.

Landungsbrücken & Old Elbe Tunnel

The piers along the harbour edge, where the ferries cast off. The Old Elbe Tunnel runs beneath the river to Steinwerder, a short walk for a grey afternoon.

Außenalster

The large lake in the middle of Hamburg, ringed by a shore path for runners and cyclists. Sailboats criss-cross it in summer, a calm spot close to the city's bustle.

Kaltehofe Elbe Island

A former waterworks on an Elbe island, now a nature reserve with ponds and boardwalks. The loop across the old filter basins is the quiet counterpoint to the harbour.
