"Little Break" - Stay at a quiet small farm

A gravel pitch on an old farmstead just over a kilometre and a half outside Altenholz, with views across fields and forest. Eleven by six metres for self-sufficient campers, intended for one to three nights. Evenings and nights are quiet, even on Sundays; only a minor access road with little traffic runs along the property. Mornings bring the sound of hens clucking. Fresh eggs for breakfast available on request. Kiel Fjord at Strande is eight kilometres away, and it's a bit further to Kiel with its ferry connections to Scandinavia. An old waiting shelter with table and chairs is available.1

Sights in the area1

Kiel

The state capital on the fjord, a good eight kilometres away. In late June the Kieler Woche fills the waterfront with sailing regattas and a fair — the coast's summer date.

Beaches on the Kiel Fjord

The fjord's bathing beaches lie at Strande, Schilksee and Falkenstein, around eight kilometres off. Sand and sailboats, the go-to for a hot afternoon.

Tiessenkai in Kiel-Holtenau

The ferries cast off here on the Kiel Canal in Holtenau, where big freighters pass. The Tiessenkai with its old ship chandler's house is worth the walk on a windy day.

Schlei and Angeln

Further north the Schlei inlet reaches inland, with the Haithabu Viking Museum and Schleswig's St Petri Cathedral. A day trip to the region behind Kiel.
