Freienorla

Color children's yard for mobile homes

Farbenkinderhof is located in Thuringia's Holzland region, above the Saale valley, near Freienorla. Surrounded by forest, not much else. Around 40 horses live on the farm, plus a donkey, a mule, a Great Dane, and a cow; mornings sound accordingly. If you'd like, you can learn to ride here or hike into the forests. Secluded location, no neighbors in sight. It's about 18 kilometers to Jena, where it's worth climbing the Jenzig or taking a detour to Loddeburg Castle ruins.1

Sights in the area1

Jena

University town on the Saale river, roughly 18 kilometres away, known for optics and Zeiss. The Zeiss Planetarium runs rain or shine — the classic for grey days.

Jenzig

Jena's local hill. A short, steep climb, and from the top the view opens over the Saale valley; the classic after-work loop for locals.

Lobdeburgruine

Remains of a hilltop castle above Jena-Lobeda, freely accessible. From the spur the view reaches far down the valley, a short forest path leads up. An outing for half an afternoon.
