View over the vineyards of the Wachau
A garden in Mautern, space for a vehicle or a tent, with the vineyards of Wachau stretching out in front, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A family lives here, along with their dog Aika. According to the hosts, it's only a few minutes to the town center and the bathing spots. In the morning you look out over the vine rows, the Wachau lies right beyond: the Danube and the old wine villages along the river. That's about all there is. And here, you don't need anything more.1

Sights in the area1
Krems an der Donau
The old wine town on the opposite bank of the Danube, with the Steiner Tor gate and its cellar lanes; the place for a stroll and Wachau wine straight from the grower.
Göttweig Abbey
The Benedictine abbey on the hill south of Mautern, visible from far off above the vineyards; the terrace opens onto the whole Danube valley.
Dürnstein
The blue church tower above the Danube and the castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was once held; the climb pays off with the view over the river bend.
Melk Abbey
The baroque Benedictine abbey high above the river marks the western end of the Wachau; its library is the classic outing for a grey day.
