Groß Sarau

Old Smithy

A natural, fenced property near Groß Sarau, still very much under development: behind the embankment a stone ridge is to grow, lizards have already moved in. Fifty metres away stands the old farmhouse from 1870, a simple toilet in the former stable, barn swallows nesting above the passage. Next to the site a fire pit. With luck, deer and pheasants cross the grounds, a few sheep live here anyway. It's two kilometres to Ratzeburger See, a quarter of an hour to Lübeck. You rarely hear the A20.1

Sights in the area1

Lake Ratzeburg

The lake starts a good two kilometres away and stretches far through the landscape; a shore path, swimming spots and rowing boats make it an easy afternoon out.

Lübeck old town

The old town sits on its island between two arms of the Trave, about thirteen kilometres off. Brick Gothic, the Holsten Gate and the smell of marzipan in the lanes, the classic rainy-day trip.

Travemünde and the Passat

At Travemünde the Trave meets the Baltic; moored at the Priwall lies the Passat, an old four-masted barque turned museum ship, good for a day of cliffs and beach.
