The Rhön - Highlights

The Rhön is a medium-altitude mountain range of volcanic origin in the border region of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. Unlike many German mountain ranges, it is open and largely forested over wide areas, with basalt peaks, mountain meadows and moors; the highest mountain is the Wasserkuppe. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is known for its wide vistas and dark night sky. Hiking, cycling and gliding on the Wasserkuppe characterize the region.

Gemünden hut

This hut has been around since the 1800s and is still in operation today. It is also a great place for a delicious Kreuzberg beer!

Thuringian hut

Cascade Gorge
