Schlei & Angeln - Highlights

Angeln lies between Flensburger Förde and Schlei: bocage hedgerows, gentle hills and water at every turn. The Schlei is not a river, but a narrow arm of the Baltic Sea — along its shores lie Schleswig with its cathedral and Viking settlement, Kappeln with its bascule bridge and Arnis, Germany's smallest town. Swimming is possible in the Förde, Schlei and Baltic Sea alike.

Viking Museum Haithabu

Reconstructed Viking settlement with museum at Haddebyer Noor — together with the Danewerk UNESCO World Heritage site.

Schleswig with St. Petri Cathedral

The old mill town with the famous Bordesholm Altar by Hans Brüggemann and the fishermen's settlement Holm.

Kappeln

Small harbor town on the Schlei with a bascule bridge and Europe's last functioning herring fence.

Arnis

With around 300 inhabitants, Germany's smallest town — a single street on a peninsula in the Schlei.

Schloss Glücksburg

One of the most important water castles in Northern Europe, ancestral seat of European royal houses, directly on the Flensburger Förde.

Schleimünde

Where the Schlei flows into the Baltic Sea: lighthouse, nature reserve and only accessible by boat or on foot from Maasholm.
