Pitch, a.k.), n.: An area of land especially suited to the cultivation of apples; specifically, an area set aside for this purpose by farmers in 19th- and early 20th-century New England. Pitch is found throughout Massachusetts, but varies greatly by location-some proven examples are old orchards with their gnarled branches, their heavy, bare, gray-green trunks rising to the sky, while others look more like sad, abandoned houses left behind after someone else has moved on to greener pastures."¹
