Lake Störmthal
Young lake in the Leipzig Neuseenland, flooded from a former brown coal open-pit mine and today an excursion destination south of the city.
The Störmthaler See is located southeast of Leipzig in Saxony and is part of the Leipziger Neuseenland, a chain of flooded open-cast brown coal mines. It is separated from the neighbouring Markkleeberger See by only a narrow dam. The Church of Vineta, which floats on the water, is a distinctive landmark visible from afar. Beach areas, cycling and hiking trails, as well as water sports characterize the still young, open landscape surrounding the lake.
