It was built between 1843 and 1857 as a residence for Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who had just received the title of "Grand Duke" from the Emperor of Russia. In 1945, it was largely destroyed by Allied bombing. Reconstruction began in 1948 and some parts were restored until 1990. Nowadays, only about 30% of the original building remains intact.
